Fuxin  Elementary School
UPM/Phelex Ecological Orchard Program


The school is in Congjiang County, southeast of Guizhou, 17 km from the closest county town. Yongli town, where the school is based, has a population of 15,742,90% of which are minorities including Han, Miao, Dong, Zhuang. About 0.67 mu is locally cultivated land, as the majority of villagers work in other industry fields. Most school children are from peasant families and rely on social welfare and national poverty relief program for subsistence. The objective is to plan to build 30 mu of UPM-Kymmene/Phelex ecological orchards and set up a ‘Special Tuition Assistance Fund'.

Project Developments:

  • In February 2005, the PF initially adopted the program.
  • In April 2005, the PF and UPM-Kymmene Corporation of Finland co-donated RMB 94,450 for building the ecological orchard tuition aid program.
  • In May 2005, the fund was ready, and the program started.
  • In July 2005, land preparation for the pear orchard and the purchase of the fruit saplings and seeds were all finished.
  • In September 2005, the infrastructures of the orchard, which included two reservoirs, a power supply line house, and a methane tank transformation were completed . And the tuition aid project progressed successfully.
  • In October 2005, a special tuition aid fund of RMB 4,430 was distributed to 297 needy students.
  • Between October and December 2005, the transplanting of pear saplings was postponed because of winter drought. The teachers and students watered the orchard to make sure that the fruit saplings would grow well. At the end of December, the Community Council members decided to replace the orange trees with gold autumn pear trees. This project will be finished before the new year.
  • Between January and February 2006, the school purchased pear saplings, farm manure, fertilizer and pesticides. They arranged for a volunteer to take charge of the tuition aid project base.
  • In March, 2006, the Special Tuition Aid Fund of RMB 4,400 was distributed to 182 disadvantaged students.
  • From April to May of 2006, with the guidance from agricultural expert,the teachers, students and villagers finished watering ,weeding and fertilizing the fruit garden. The pear trees have grown very well.
